Amorphis started out as a pure death metal band but soon steered away from the genre s underground scene and have since created their own unique and highly successful blend of heavy metal progressive rock and folk. I am giving this album 4 stars only because the previous release to this the amazing elegy was a groundbreaker in terms of the integration of death doom metal with classic folky melodies. Tuonela marked the first complete departure from amorphis death metal roots.

The growling vocals appear only a handful of times and are the only remnant of the old sound. Amorphis fourth release 1999 s tuonela finds the finnish metal titans leaving their death metal roots behind following their amazing third album 1996 s elegy which featured a very creative and eclectic blend of death metal progressive metal melodic death folk and psychedelic sounds and was also the first amorphis album to feature lead clean vocalist pasi koskinen and here on this. But tuonela does give the listener a similar feeling of the band that managed to transform a style born in the seclusive world of the metal underground into something valid for the evolution of modern heavy music. The melodies are softer but emotions still run high.
